Here in the Central Valley, we eat a lot of local almonds. Almost every month, a patient comes into our Modesto office after biting down too hard on a nut or a piece of hard candy. They hear a loud pop, and suddenly they have a cracked or broken back tooth. It hurts to chew, and they worry they might lose the tooth completely. When a tooth has major damage, a simple filling is not enough to fix it. That is when finding a local dentist who can place a strong, natural-looking dental crown becomes a priority. A dental crown acts like a protective helmet for your tooth. It covers the entire visible part, holding it together so you can eat normally again without any pain.
During your complete oral exam at Gill Dental & Implants, we check the extent of the damage. If the crack is very small, we might just use tooth colored fillings to patch it up quickly. But if the tooth is weak, has a very large old metal filling, or recently had a root canal, a teeth crown is the safest choice.
Getting a dental crown usually takes two visits. On the first visit, we numb the area completely. Then, we shape the damaged tooth so the new cap fits perfectly over it. We take a digital impression of your bite and send it to a lab to make your permanent dental crown. We will place a temporary cap on your tooth so you can still grab lunch down on McHenry Ave or run errands near the College Area without feeling sensitive to hot or cold drinks.
Leaving a broken tooth untreated usually leads to an infection inside the root. A dental crown seals out bacteria and prevents further decay. If you are missing a tooth completely, a teeth crown is also the final step when we place dental implants to fill the gap.
We match the color of the porcelain to your exact shade. Some patients from Ceres and Salida even choose to do a quick teeth whitening treatment first so their new dental crown matches a brighter, upgraded smile. Once the permanent teeth crown is bonded in place, it looks, acts, and feels exactly like your natural enamel.
With normal brushing and flossing, a high-quality dental crown lasts about 10 to 15 years. Treat it just like your other teeth, but try to avoid chewing on ice or opening packages with your mouth, as this can chip the porcelain.
No. We use strong local numbing medicine before we do any work. You might feel some pressure, but the procedure is painless. Your gums might feel slightly tender for a day or two after we place the permanent teeth crown, but that fades very fast.
The price depends on the material we use, like pure porcelain or ceramic. Most dental insurance plans cover a large portion of a teeth crown because it is a necessary dental treatment to save your tooth. We always give you a clear written estimate during your visit.
A veneer only covers the front surface of your tooth for cosmetic reasons. A dental crown covers the entire tooth down to the gum line to provide structural strength and stop it from breaking apart.
If your temporary teeth crown comes loose while eating a sticky snack, do not panic. Keep the temporary cap safe and call our Modesto office right away. We will quickly reattach it to protect your tooth while we wait for your permanent dental crown to arrive from the lab.
Yes, the natural tooth underneath your teeth crown can still get a cavity right at the gum line where the porcelain meets your root. That is why brushing and flossing around your dental crown every single day is so important. If you keep the gum area clean, your restored tooth will stay healthy and strong for years.
If you have a cracked tooth, dental crown can be a great replacement. If you've recently undergone root canal therapy, dental crowns could be a great fit for you.
It begins with a dental exam and x-rays of the affected tooth to check for the feasibility. Following this, our modesto dentist will move ahead with taking the impression of your teeth. Once your dental crowns are made at the lab, you will be invited to our office for the crowns to be placed on your teeth.
It is important to follow the guidelines provided by our modesto dentist. In general, crowns can be cared for by brushing twice a day, staying away from hard foods and maintain dental hygiene.

Looking for a Dentist? THIS IS THE PLACE!! They have been our dentist office for 8 years now. The office staff is helpful with scheduling and insurance. In the back they are so helpful answering questions, explaining treatments. Dr Gill is simply amazing and sets the bar very high for all of his staff. But hands down Dr Sharma is the most kind and caring Dentist I have had in my 52 years. Her chair-side manner is lovely, she truly cares and wants to make sure you are comfortable and in ZERO pain. I had a crown procedure on my lower right molar, the next day the text me to check to see how I was feeling!!!! It is just not, that I feel cared for.... I AM CARED FOR!!!
First let me state that I rarely give reviews. But when exceptional service is given, it’s so important to share. I had the best service at the Gill Family Dentistry. Ingrid, Jolene, and Lily were all very kind and shared their personal experiences to ease my anxiety of removing my wisdom tooth. I was still nervous when Dr.Gill introduced himself and explained the procedure. But as soon as he noticed how tense I was, he was able to calmly talk me through my fears and I truly felt like I was in the best capable hands. He was calm, quick and steady the entire time. His calmness and care has made me a patient for life. Thank you so much Gill Family Dentistry. I look forward to coming back soon.
I have lived in Modesto for 18 years. I was very in need of a good dentist for my mom when she moved here from back east. I found Dr. Gill online and went in for a consultation. The entire staff was friendly and genuine. We had a lot of decisions to make about the work my mom needed and I was in a panic over how I would pay for it. Dentures are very expensive. I had already been through the experience with my husband with another dentist. Jolene helped us get care credit and really explained everything and made it work for us. Dr Gill explained everything in a way that we understood and he really showed care and concern for my mom. I highly recommend Gill Family!
