Every summer, right after students graduate from Modesto Junior College or high schools around the College Area, our phones start ringing. Young adults often feel a dull, constant ache in the back of their jaw. Sometimes, their gums swell up right before a big summer trip. When your third molars start pushing through, they cause a lot of pain and pressure. When you deal with this discomfort, finding a trusted local dentist helps evaluate your smile quickly. At Gill Dental & Implants, we specialize in gentle wisdom tooth removal. Taking out your wisdom teeth protects your other healthy teeth from shifting out of place and stops the pain completely so you can enjoy your summer.
Most people simply do not have enough room in their jaw for four extra teeth. When wisdom teeth try to squeeze in, they often become impacted. This means they get stuck under the gums or trap themselves against your jawbone. Impacted teeth lead to swelling, bad breath, and even painful infections.
During your routine complete oral exams, we use low-radiation digital x-rays to see exactly how your wisdom teeth are growing under the surface. If the x-rays show those teeth pushing sideways into your healthy molars, we will recommend a targeted tooth extraction to stop future damage. Removing them early saves you from needing more expensive dental work later in life.
Many patients from nearby towns like Ceres and Salida feel nervous about having their wisdom teeth taken out. We focus entirely on making the wisdom tooth removal process relaxing. First, we numb the area completely using strong local anesthetics. We gently remove the wisdom teeth and carefully clean the empty spaces. You go home the same day with clear, simple instructions on how to heal up fast. You might have to skip the crunchy snacks at the Vintage Faire Mall food court for a few days, but you will feel much better very soon.
Not always. If your wisdom teeth come in completely straight, fully break through the gums, and you have plenty of room in your mouth, you might be able to keep them. We just watch them closely during your regular checkups to make sure they stay healthy.
No. We make sure you are completely numb before we begin. You will feel some pressure while we work, but no sharp pain. Your jaw will feel sore and stiff for a few days after the numbing medicine wears off. Over-the-counter pain relievers handle this stiffness easily.
Most of the initial swelling goes down after about three or four days. You should plan to rest at home and eat soft foods like yogurt, warm soup, and smoothies for the first weekend. Your gums will finish healing completely over the next few weeks.
The price changes depending on how many wisdom teeth we need to remove and if they are impacted under the bone. Dental insurance usually covers a big portion of the cost because it is a necessary medical procedure. We always give you a printed price estimate before your appointment.
A dry socket happens if the protective blood clot falls out of the healing space too early. This leaves the bone exposed and causes pain. To prevent a dry socket, do not use a drinking straw, do not smoke, and do not spit forcefully for at least a week after your wisdom tooth removal.
It is usually easiest to remove them during your late teens or early twenties. At this age, the roots are not fully formed and the jawbone is softer, which makes the removal process much faster and helps you heal up very quickly. However, we can safely remove them at any age if they are causing you pain or putting pressure on your other teeth.

Looking for a Dentist? THIS IS THE PLACE!! They have been our dentist office for 8 years now. The office staff is helpful with scheduling and insurance. In the back they are so helpful answering questions, explaining treatments. Dr Gill is simply amazing and sets the bar very high for all of his staff. But hands down Dr Sharma is the most kind and caring Dentist I have had in my 52 years. Her chair-side manner is lovely, she truly cares and wants to make sure you are comfortable and in ZERO pain. I had a crown procedure on my lower right molar, the next day the text me to check to see how I was feeling!!!! It is just not, that I feel cared for.... I AM CARED FOR!!!
First let me state that I rarely give reviews. But when exceptional service is given, it’s so important to share. I had the best service at the Gill Family Dentistry. Ingrid, Jolene, and Lily were all very kind and shared their personal experiences to ease my anxiety of removing my wisdom tooth. I was still nervous when Dr.Gill introduced himself and explained the procedure. But as soon as he noticed how tense I was, he was able to calmly talk me through my fears and I truly felt like I was in the best capable hands. He was calm, quick and steady the entire time. His calmness and care has made me a patient for life. Thank you so much Gill Family Dentistry. I look forward to coming back soon.
I have lived in Modesto for 18 years. I was very in need of a good dentist for my mom when she moved here from back east. I found Dr. Gill online and went in for a consultation. The entire staff was friendly and genuine. We had a lot of decisions to make about the work my mom needed and I was in a panic over how I would pay for it. Dentures are very expensive. I had already been through the experience with my husband with another dentist. Jolene helped us get care credit and really explained everything and made it work for us. Dr Gill explained everything in a way that we understood and he really showed care and concern for my mom. I highly recommend Gill Family!
